Octavia E. Butler - Earthseed, Book 1 -… [342]

“We learn to survive,” I said. “It’s a good book. Take care of it. You know how my father is about his books.” … The rain stopped. My windows are on the north side of the house, and I can see the clouds breaking up. They’re being blown over the mountains toward the desert. Surprising how fast they can move. The wind is strong and cold now. It might cost us a few trees. — , Octavia E. Butler - Earthseed, Book 1 -…, 342

Note

The pivot from spoken dialogue to diary is done by a hard cut, and the tonal whiplash is the point: the handing over of a survival manual lands on the flat household warning about Dad’s books, then the prose abruptly widens into weather-watching. The clouds are ‘blown over the mountains toward the desert’ — the same motion she has been describing for herself — and the calm meter of ‘Surprising how fast they can move’ carries the dread without naming it.
