Octavia E. Butler - Earthseed, Book 1 -… [331]

At last. “Have you read all your family’s books?” … “Some of them. Not all. They aren’t all worth reading. Books aren’t going to save us.” … “Nothing is going to save us. If we don’t save ourselves, we’re dead. Now use your imagination. Is there anything on your family bookshelves that might help you if you were stuck outside?” — , Octavia E. Butler - Earthseed, Book 1 -…, 331

Note

The turn of the scene compressed to two lines of dialogue: Jo’s throwaway brush-off (‘Books aren’t going to save us’) is caught and rotated into Lauren’s creed — ‘Nothing is going to save us. If we don’t save ourselves, we’re dead.’ The move from declarative sermon to concrete question (‘what if you were stuck outside?’) shows Lauren learning on the page how to make her belief usable rather than merely true. ‘At last’ as a one-beat paragraph marks the whole exchange’s hinge.
