Octavia E. Butler - Earthseed, Book 1 -… [2162]
There was no house. There were no buildings. There was almost nothing: A broad black smear on the hillside; a few charred planks sticking up from the rubble, some leaning against others; and a tall brick chimney, standing black and solitary like a tombstone in a picture of an old-style graveyard. A tombstone amid the bones and ashes. — , Octavia E. Butler - Earthseed, Book 1 -…, 2162
Note
The arrival-at-the-promised-home beat is inverted: the sentence starts by negating the house, then inventories rubble with appositive fragments separated by semicolons, delaying the chimney to the end so the simile lands on it. The one-word-echo coda (‘A tombstone amid the bones and ashes’) repeats the image stripped of its ‘like’ — turning a comparison into a statement of fact, which is also the chapter’s turn.
