Zionism’s settlement of Palestine structurally required demographic and cultural replacement of natives.

Evidence

A defining quality of the project is that in its goal of establishing a constitutionally exclusive Jewish state (Masri 2017; Rouhana 1997) was inherent the concept and practice of replacement of the native. Zionism came to build a Jewish homeland in Palestine. It is obvious that in practice, this could have only meant displacement and replacement, a major characteristic of many settler-colonial regimes. While displacement did not take the form of physical extermination as in other cases (nor was this one of the intended means to achieve displacement), it did take the form of demographic elimination or demographic riddance – by using brute violence, as in various ways of ethnic cleansing that evacuated the part of Palestine on which Israel was established of the vast majority of its Palestinians – or legal means, such as citizenship laws that prevent Palestinian refugees from returning and open the gates to Jews to immigrate with particular ease. Displacement also included the geographic displacement or erasure by destroying more than 400 Palestinian towns inside the area of Israel (W. Khalidi 2006) and replacing them with hundreds of Jewish towns. — Nadim N. Rouhana and Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian, When Politics Are Sacralized, 466
