Zero-sum invasion anxieties are racially indexed even when unspoken
Evidence
The threat of invasion implicit in each set of these concerns is racially indexed. Those from the global south are threatening to take those jobs “here” they haven’t already grabbed through outsourcing; mutants from rogue states are threatening “our” wellbeing by plotting terror attacks or seeking nuclear arms; and those from unsanitary societies threaten “our” health by prompting the emergence of new viral diseases circulated as a consequence of global migrations and mobilities. The bearer of threat as condition of presumptively distinct ways of being in the world equates implicitly – implicatively – to racial otherness under a different description, under descriptive distinction. — David Theo Goldberg, The Threat of Race, 1860
Categorization
- XREF: Offers a non-race axis test for threatened-privilege mobilization: nativity/migration anxieties map the mechanism onto race via outgroup invasion, relevant to the reader’s generalization question. — connects to: Perceived racial threat drives zero-sum fears that justify defensive aggression — David Theo Goldberg, The Threat of Race: Reflections on…, 151; Invasion anxiety about migration, terror, and disease is racially indexed; Racist hostility can be inferred even when no race is mentioned — David Theo Goldberg, John Solomos, A Companion to Racial and Ethnic Studies, 1880
- SEED: Angle: the three proxy domains (jobs, terror, disease) as a taxonomy of modern ‘invasion’ rhetoric that lets groups voice status threat without naming race.
Broader Connections
