Young eco-saboteurs in 1971 vandalized development sites to stop sprawl

Evidence

In 1971, the Tucson Eco-Raiders continued the tradition of antisprawl monkey wrenching. “We bear a grudge against developers who go in and flatten out everything,” one explained. “In general, if we see a nice area of the desert being destroyed, we’ll do something about it.” Like the Grand Canyon defenders a decade earlier, the Eco-Raiders cut down billboards. But the group of college-age boys went much farther. As Zakin explains, they “pulled up survey stakes from housing sites, poured lead in the locks of developer’s offices, ripped out electrical and plumbing fixtures in unsold houses, broke windows, sabotaged bulldozers,” and trashed everything that symbolized urban sprawl. — Adam Rome, The Bulldozer in the Countryside, 630
