Women’s liberation consciousness made the utopia-maternal link explicit in fiction

Evidence

This passage evokes the beautiful (withheld rather than promised) land as the nurturant maternal body. The linkage of the utopian to the maternal, found frequently throughout Western figurations and analyses of utopia, is an important element of the fictional configurations I analyze here. The conscious deployment of this linkage is characteristic of the self-conscious engagement with gender politics of post-sixties postmodernist fiction, forged in the heat of second-wave feminism and the other sixties new social movements. — Marianne DeKoven, Utopia Limited, 905
