Within social media the house signals intimate specificity while the car signals generic interchangeability

Evidence

Or, on social media, the car is a background for monologues, dialogues, commentary, and criticism or simply going through the motions of one’s day for the benefit of an audience. If the house is a space of personal intimacy, where property is conflated with personhood, where the details of interior design become signifiers of specificity, of personality as such, the car is generic, fungible—devoid of personality, devoid of specificity. Yet even as the car seems to reverse the specificity of the home, it ultimately becomes a background deployed for similar ends. Where the home allows access to the apparently private through the visualization of domestic interiority, the car permits access to psychological interiority through its appearance as something nonspecific, interchangeable, placeless. — Grant Bollmer, Katherine Guinness, The Influencer Factory, 173
