White antipathy toward black beneficiaries drives opposition to safety nets

Evidence

Research shows that white Americans often oppose safety net programs if they believe black people will benefit. White victims of white supremacy, I argue, should not be eligible for reparations for black people. Instead, they should be at the forefront of the fight to dismantle white supremacy and support black reparations—not asking for a share. They could also stop opposing safety net programs that would financially benefit them. — Dorothy A. Brown, Getting to Reparations, 552
