Evidence

The following anecdote recorded by Berdyaev is noteworthy: ā€œA Soviet young man went to France…[and] was asked what impression France left upon him. He answered: ā€˜There is no freedom in this country.’…The young man expounded his idea of freedom:…The so-called [French] freedom was of the kind which leaves everything unchanged; every day was like its predecessors;…and so the young man who came from Russia was bored in Franceā€ (op. — Hannah Arendt, The Origins of Totalitarianism, 2477
