West Coast technologists, not mainstream media, first embraced Web 2.0

Evidence

While the mainstream media largely ignored the conference (even the San Francisco Chronicle dismissed it as an “online lovefest”), it was embraced by West Coast technologists. Entrepreneur Jason Calacanis live-blogged the conference, while venture capitalist Esther Dyson snapped photos and instantly posted them to Flickr, the photo-sharing site that served as a centerpiece to the conference. Evan Williams (founder of Blogger and Twitter) enthusiastically blogged, “Seems like perfect timing for such a conference. The feeling of doing things again, but newer and better is in the air—and lots of folks are ready to play.” — Alice E. Marwick, Status Update, 151
