According to a federal indictment, on December 1, 2016, Welch was at home in Salisbury, North Carolina, when he texted his girlfriend, telling her he’d been watching YouTube videos about Pizzagate and that it was making him “sick.” Later that night and the next day, he texted with a friend, identified in court documents as C. — Anna Merlan, Republic of Lies, 225
