Volunteer organizations face for-profit problems like turnover and commitment
Evidence
While there is a burgeoning literature on the role of leadership in the traditional organization (Giffords, 2003), much less attention has been paid to the impact of leadership on organizational behavior in nontraditional organizations such as volunteer organizations, service clubs, and charities (Clary & Snyder, 1999). Volunteer organizations are faced with many problems typical of for-profit organizations such as turnover, commitment, and job satisfaction. Therefore, the vast literature on leadership should be extended to address similar issues faced by nonprofit organizations. To that end, it is an empirical question whether traditional leadership theories can be applied successfully to volunteer organizations. — Roderick M. Kramer, Geoffrey J. Leonardelli, Robert W. No doubt, under feudalism, serfs toiling away on their ancestral lands would have suffered great hardships but still found it undesirable, if not unfathomable, to have their way of life taken away from them, their shared culture and traditions. Still, the harsh reality remained: at the end of the harvest, the landlord would send the sheriff to extract the lion’s share of their produce – without paying the serfs a penny for it. So it goes with the billions of us unwittingly producing cloud capital. The fact that we do so voluntarily, happily even, does not detract from the fact that we are unpaid manufacturers – cloud serfs whose daily self-directed toil enriches a tiny band of multibillionaires residing mostly in California or Shanghai. — Yanis Varoufakis, Technofeudalism, 338 (
