Voisey’s Bay will discharge acid-generating waste into pristine seas

Evidence

Voisey’s Bay Nickel Company has big plans. They propose to extract an estimated 150 million tons of nickel, cobalt, and copper ore from a massive deposit located in what is now a fertile valley. According to the Friends of Nitassinan, a Vermont-based support group, approximately 16 million tons of acid-generating waste rock will be discharged into presently pristine marine environments, and 55 million tons of waste rock will be spread over the land. The company, however, promises to “rehabilitate the site post-mining” to “approach predevelopment conditions.” That is impossible. — Winona LaDuke, All Our Relations, 368
