Visibility functions as income allowing employers to underpay in cash
Evidence
The generations of youth entering the job market are brought to understand that increased visibility (getting themselves known in certain networks, adding a line to their curriculum vitae) is their most precious income – which means that they can be underpaid in monetary terms for work dressed up as an internship. We find here a very concrete illustration of the principle stating that ‘money now flows along with attention’: in a whole range of professions, jobs (and therefore salaries) flow along paths of visibility, sometimes to the extent that it replaces monetary exchange. — Yves Citton, The Ecology of Attention, 142
