Violence against Morisco converts forced them from Granada for safety
Evidence
The Church’s policy of selective recruitment of priests and leaders from among the Morisco population failed to produce the desired results. For their own safety, in the tense period following the Granadan War, Ignacio de las Casas and others were removed from Granada and sent to Rome (where thought was given to making use of their special linguistic capacities in the service of the Church in the Middle East, but that is quite another story, although a fascinating one). The Jesuits had taken over the policy of fostering assimilation initiated by Talavera and for a time had made an intelligent and determined attempt to make it succeed. — L. P. Harvey, Muslims in Spain, 1500 to 1614, 1107

- QUESTION: The Morisco priest idea of serving the Church in the Middle East — did any of these linguistically qualified converts actually reach Ottoman territory? Worth chasing.
