Vegas-era machismo defeated the androgynous gender-utopian sixties male ideal

Evidence

Violent machismo, linked to a fear and loathing of women, is a recurring motif, an integral part of this ironic search for the American Dream. This machismo is a legacy of one mode of sixties masculinity, that of the Hell’s Angels Thompson was so deeply involved with, and of the violent, hard-line Marxist-Leninist wing of New Left radicalism. The emergence of this machismo as a primary mode of postmodern masculinity largely defeated the gentle, androgynous, long-haired, genderutopian male mode that was one dominant style of sixties masculinity, as I discuss in chapter 5. — Marianne DeKoven, Utopia Limited, 341
