Valck’s stalled career contrasted with his schoolmate’s rise to director

Evidence

His career was short and without luster. In 1866 he became a Controleur Second Class. Two years later he was reprimanded for challenging an Indies Army Captain to a duel when dueling was forbidden by law. When his classmate Norman Levyssohn was already director of the colonial Civil Service, Valck was still only in a lowly Civil Service post as Controleur First Class. — Ann Laura Stoler, Along the Archival Grain_ Epistemic…, 1262
