Utopian hope couples denunciation of the present order with annunciation of a new one.

Evidence

Like Freire, Gutiérrez (1971) believed Utopia consisted of two subversive forces in history: denunciation and annunciation. A commitment to Utopia “necessarily means a denunciation of the existing order … a repudiation of a dehumanizing situation” (p. 233). At the same time Utopia announces the new order “the forecast of a different order of things, a new society” (Gutiérrez, 1971, p. 233). This dynamic of denouncing and announcing leads to action whereby people both imagine and voice their dream for a new society while working to bring it into being. — James D.
