Evidence

The US Indian boarding-school system operated approximately 350 schools from 1879 through the 1960s, with some schools continuing into the 1990s. The 2022 report of the US Department of the Interior’s Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative — commissioned by Secretary Deb Haaland (Laguna Pueblo), the first Native American Cabinet secretary — identified 408 federal Indian boarding schools across 37 states. The report documented at least 53 burial sites containing the remains of children who died at the schools. — , The Rod and the Child, 5150
