Unregulated liquid nicotine is a lethal neurotoxin sold in child-attractive packaging

Evidence

Liquid nicotine is a deadly neurotoxin that currently is being sold without regulation in shops and online in varying concentrations, even by the barrel (Richtel, 2014b). Chip Paul, operator of a national franchise, described the e-nicotine industry as “the wild, wild west right now” (Richtel, 2014b). Children can be drawn to drink liquid nicotine because of the bottles’ luminous, colored labels and aromatic flavorings. Lee Cantrell, a professor of pharmacy at the University of California, San Francisco, explains, “It’s not a matter of if a child will be seriously poisoned or killed. It’s a matter of when” (Richtel, 2014b). Reports of accidental poisonings among children, some as young as age two, are rising. — Albert Bandura, Moral Disengagement, 1735

  • SHARE: Worth sending to someone studying regulatory gaps or consumer product safety — the convergence of a deadly neurotoxin, candy-like packaging, and zero regulation is striking.
  • XREF: Echoes the moral disengagement pattern elsewhere in this book: industries externalizing harm (to children here) while framing their product as harm reduction.
