Unpersonalized studies underestimate how strongly the algorithm pushes conspiratorial content
Evidence
An important limitation of existing studies is that the researchers all accessed YouTube with an IP address that had no prior cookies stored. The results are therefore based on the general recommendation algorithm and not the personalized ‘recommended-for-you’ videos. This matters because if you are a regular consumer of conspiratorial content, you’re much more likely to be presented with similar recommendations. So, if anything, these results may be underestimating the true state of things. — Sander van der Linden, Foolproof, 409
