UNOSOM’s hiring of Habar Gidir locals fatally compromised its intelligence.

Evidence

There was now all-out war in Mogadishu between fortress U.N., commanded by the beleaguered admiral in his bunker, and ā€˜Aideed and his swelling following of ragged guerrillas who were always several steps ahead of the cumbersomely equipped and poorly informed blue berets. U.N.O.S.O.M. had carelessly recruited many Habar Gidir clansmen to administrative roles and, for all its sophisticated equipment, its intelligence service was hopelessly compromised. In every respect the U.N. operation was high on high tech and low on low cunning, the kind of local intelligence in which ā€˜Aideed and other Somali citizens of Mogadishu were so expert. — I.M.
