Underground film screenings in 1960 drew booing from Provincetown audiences

Evidence

There at the Sun Gallery, site of Red Grooms’s 1959 happenings and Oldenburg’s 1960 show of collaged newspapers and burnt-edged cardboard, he presented The Death of P’town and Little Stabs at Happiness, a half dozen camera rolls, most shot with Smith during the making of Star Spangled to Death. If the progression of Grooms to Oldenburg to Jacobs was natural, P’town was predictably unappreciative. Jacobs was booed. “The people who ran the gallery were terrific,” he remembered, “but not the audience.” — J. Hoberman, Everything Is Now, 213
