Underground film perfectionism coexisted with slapstick improvisation.

Evidence

Smith was a perfectionist; the search for the swamp where Uncle Pasty (Arnold Rockwood, the beefy, cunnilingual rapist from Flaming Creatures) would stalk The Girl (Diana Baccus) seemed to last for weeks. In addition to the mask worn in the earlier film, Pasty sports a set of trick-store fangs that come loose when The Girl deflects his attentions (causing him to fall out of character) with a custard pie in the kisser. A parallel scene has a handsome if slime-covered, druggy-looking Werewolf rising from the primeval muck to assault the increasingly disheveled Mermaid (Mario Montez), the equally dazed camera spinning overhead, and offer her a Coke. — J.
