As all-encompassing as it was, the Festival drew from and overlapped with other presentations and was in some ways a recapitulation of work that had appeared during the past summer. MacLise and his then partner Frances Stillman had previewed Rites in May; Jack Smith’s August benefit for his work-in-progress Normal Love involved musical accompaniment by MacLise and Walter De Maria; the movie itself was projected on a number of gossamer-clad dancers (Susanna De Maria, Jeanne Phillips, Mario Montez and Smith himself). — J.
