Unconventional artists disrupted established parades by commandeering their spectacle.
Evidence
Latimer maintained that Kusama caused a two-hour delay, but once the parade began moving, she simply joined in. He was pleased to see this “ridiculous teeny-tiny Japanese chick strutting down the street,” followed by an enormous banner reading SELF (KUSAMA) OBLITERATION. Noting that Kusama was still attached to a hammer-and-sickle flag and was, in fact, dragging it through the mud, a vigilant bystander alerted the authorities. A “racketeer type, cigar and vest and all,” whom Latimer assumed came from Con Ed, threatened to cut the power on the whole parade unless the bedraggled banner vanished. — J.
