Tsipras’s 2015 capitulation triggered the whole left-populist movement’s decline
Evidence
From that point on, however, the upward movement stalled. The first setback occurred as early as the summer of 2015. Alexis Tsipras bowed to the demands of his European creditors, thus halting the momentum that brought him to power and condemning his party to go back into opposition after the next general election. The Greek white flag, in turn, created the first tensions between the Spanish corsair and the French, the latter trying to dissociate himself from Tsipras’s strategy. … Podemos experienced its electoral apex in 2015–16—in 2019, it lost half of its seats in Parliament (from seventy-one to thirty-five). Most importantly, it almost imploded in the meantime; it lost its most prominent strategist and former number two, Íñigo Errejón, due to fierce disputes over the party’s game plan. La France insoumise (LFI) performed disappointingly in all the elections held after the presidential contest (legislative, local, European). Its leader’s reputation was seriously damaged by the controversial episode of the police search of party headquarters. In the UK, Corbyn never succeeded in pushing Labour’s results up, in a context overdetermined by the Brexit negotiations, and eventually stepped down from the party leadership. Finally, Bernie failed once more to win the Democratic Party’s nomination for the presidency, notwithstanding his four years of preparation and the considerable financial and human resources he relied on during his campaign. — Arthur Borriello and Anton Jäger, The Populist Moment, 163
