Treasury lacks the Black staff needed to lead racial-equity tax reform

Evidence

I believe that for tax reform in this context to be successful, the Department of the Treasury should not be leading the implementation effort. It is ill suited to efforts centering on racial equity. According to a recent Treasury report to Congress, less than one half of 1 percent of its economists are black men, and less than 2 percent are black women. My negative views on the Treasury Department are informed by my experience serving on the twenty-five-member Treasury Advisory Committee on Racial Equity, established by Treasury secretary Janet Yellen from 2022 to 2024. Perhaps part of any systemic reform of our tax laws should include a transformed and reorganized Treasury Department, with new personnel and a racial equity focus. — Dorothy A.
