Traditional Islam hosts two religious styles simultaneously unlike the Mediterranean’s historical shift
Evidence
One of the first persons to explore the contrast between anonymous, doctrinal, scriptural, soteriological, unified world religion on the one hand, and a traditional locally rooted religion which is primarily a ratification of social segmentation on the other, was Fustel de Coulanges (1956). But Fustel described the Mediterranean as having passed definitely from one style to the other. The truly important thing about traditional Islam is that within it the two styles coexist simultaneously, under a single label. — Diego Gambetta, Trust - Making and Breaking Cooperative…, 2004
