Total innocence makes prisoners most suitable for destroying the juridical person
Evidence
This largest group has consisted ever since of people who had done nothing whatsoever that, either in their own consciousness or the consciousness of their tormenters, had any rational connection with their arrest. In Germany, after 1938, this element was represented by masses of Jews, in Russia by any groups which, for any reason having nothing to do with their actions, had incurred the disfavor of the authorities. These groups, innocent in every sense, are the most suitable for thorough experimentation in disfranchisement and destruction of the juridical person, and therefore they are both qualitatively and quantitatively the most essential category of the camp population. — Hannah Arendt, The Origins of Totalitarianism, 1008
Categorization
- XREF: Core mechanism for the construction of the wholly disposable Other — directly feeds Islamophobia-field readings on dehumanization and the arbitrary subject.
- DEFINE: This defines Arendt’s key category of the ‘totally innocent’ camp inmate and establishes why innocence is more dangerous than guilt under totalitarianism.
- DEEPTHINKING: The paradox that total innocence is the optimal target for arbitrary destruction — a paradigm-shifting inversion of ordinary legal-moral logic.
