Topography-driven wind patterns skew treefall frequency and thus species abundance locally

Evidence

On Kolombangara, in the Solomon Islands, Whitmore (1974) recognized four distinctive tree regeneration types on the basis of age-specific requirements and gap size preference. Due to the interaction of topography and prevailing winds, treefall frequency differs consistently over parts of the island, resulting in predictable differences in the relative abundance of the four regeneration types. — S.
