Three distinct constituencies pressured Osman in the 1967 presidential campaign
Evidence
Even many genuine supporters did not appreciate the depth of Osman’s convictions. Consequently three types of people visited him in the months preceding the election. The first group was parliamentarians and other notables who urged him to run and who genuinely felt that he was the best man for the country. Some nonparliamentarians offered their own money to him to cover the costs of this endeavor. The second group was parliamentarians who preferred Osman for the presidency but who wanted him to promise that a Northerner would be the future prime minister or other favors. The final set was a smaller group who simply did not care about the issues and the nation’s interest but who tried to play the money game. — Abdi Ismail Samatar, Africa’s First Democrats, 1467
