Thinking precedes and determines all interpretive composition
Evidence
Perhaps this brief comment will serve to point out the indispensability of deep meditation of all the conditions to be met, of the subject and of people and their limitations, before any writing whatever is attempted. I suppose it sums up this way: you must be in love with your material, and you must be in tune with your fellow man. What ensues is composition; not easy, needing pitiless editing and cool criticism, full of pitfalls, barbed with discouraging false starts and notes—but a great joy when the bull’s-eye is hit. But the thinking will determine the result. — Freeman Tilden, Interpreting Our Heritage, 406
