Theme parks continue the Orientalist tour tradition by staging imagined Eastern horrors.

Evidence

The Indiana Jones films are not the only creations of George Lucas that reflect both Orientalism and medievalism. The theme park is today’s equivalent of an eighteenth-century tour down the Nile. Disneyland’s Indiana Jones “Adventure” ride features a tour of Oriental horrors, including “caverns of bubbling death, screaming undead mummies, erupting lava, evil wraiths and giant snakes.” — Sophia Rose Arjana, Muslims in the Western Imagination, 606

Categorization

  • SEED: Angle: the theme park as the contemporary heir of the Grand Tour and colonial exhibition — manufactured environments of ‘the East’ as immersive entertainment rather than encounter.
  • ADDENDUM: This echoes the ‘Grafting & Growth’ essay’s interest in how man-made environments encode worldview, here as a ride engineered around Orientalist fear.
