The US transformed from slaveholding society to one electing Black leaders

Evidence

We have made tremendous progress in this country. It is nothing short of awe-inspiring to witness a nation that once enslaved black Americans transform itself, in less than two centuries of freedom, into a country where it is possible to elect our first black president, who lived in a house built by enslaved hands, and then our first black woman vice president, who lived on land once tended by enslaved hands. This is an achievement to be acknowledged and celebrated. — Dorothy A. Brown, Getting to Reparations, 466
