The uprising’s aftermath employed Black handymen boarding up white-owned storefronts
Evidence
The uprising left some blocks ravaged and others untouched. Windows were shattered, businesses (mainly white) were demolished. Residents were wary. Dumpsters appeared everywhere. “I see Negro handymen put to work because of the riots boarding up smashed storefronts,” David Henderson wrote in his seven-section-long “Keep on Pushing (Harlem Riots/Summer/1964),” named for the Impressions song that was a Freedom Summer hit. — J.
