The unhappy consciousness produces its enemy from within its own self-struggle

Evidence

Hegel later attributes a comparable movement and production of the enemy to the-unhappy consciousness. In this case, mutual indifference is impossible, and consciousness is engaged in “a contradictory movement in which one opposite does not come to rest in its opposite, but in it only produces itself afresh as an opposite. Here, then, we have a struggle against an enemy to vanquish whom is really to suffer defeat” (Hegel, Phenomenology of Spirit, 127/Gr64). … “This enemy,” Hegel continues, “renews himself in his defeat, and consciousness, in fixing its attention on him, far from freeing itself from him, really remains for ever in contact with him” (136/GI74). — Gil Anidjar, The Jew, the Arab, 1037
