The Soerabaja craft school enrolled a total of only dozens over five decades.

Evidence

In its first year there were 41 youths, 81 two years later, and 51 when it closed. Under the state’s aegis, numbers were smaller still. Although more than 70 students were enrolled between 1862 and 1864, 50 soon dropped out, leaving but 20 who finished the course. In any one year, there were no more than 13 students. Just before its third closing in 1872 there were none. Upon reopening once again in the 1880s as a school for continuing “refresher” education (herhalingschool), in the years following it often had no enrollment at all. — Ann Laura Stoler, Along the Archival Grain_ Epistemic…, 675
