The Satanic Verses affair erased the spatial distance between Islam and the West.
Evidence
It was in 1989 that both the conceptual and physical distance between Islam and the West was removed. no longer were ‘Islam’ and ‘Muslims’ out-there and external: beginning with 1989, so the proximity – the previously critical distance necessary – was removed to the extent that Islam and Muslims were acknowledged as being here and more troublingly, within. The prime events associated with this change was the unfolding of the Satanic Verses affair in the UK and Khomeini’s fatwa; the emergence of the hijab debates emerging in France at the regional level; and the fall of communism. — Chris Allen, Islamophobia, 227
