The S.Y.L. demanded a ten-year Four Power trusteeship and no Italian return

Evidence

The main spokesman for the S.Y.L. was ‘Abdillahi ‘Ise (later to become the first Premier of Somalia). The League’s President, Haji Mahammad Husseyn, also played a prominent part in the hearings; and the very detailed and impressive S.Y.L. programme for the future development of the country was drafted with the advice of Mr Salole, an Aden Somali lawyer employed in the legal department of the Administration, and of Michael Mariano, a former administrative employee from the north. As on previous occasions, the party stressed its aim of bringing the Somali territories together under a single government, of working steadily towards full independence, and advocated a ten years’ period of trusteeship for Somalia under Four Power administration. On no account would the League countenance a return of Italian rule. — I.M. Lewis, I. M. Lewis, A Modern History of the Somali_ Nation…, 346
