The radicalized hip scene ran liberated spaces and self-defense patrols

Evidence

The November 21 Village Voice ran a page-one story headlined THE RADICALIZATION OF HIP that discussed not only the liberation of the Fillmore but the inexpensive coffeehouse Common Ground (a block from Tompkins Square Park), a so-called liberated space open to activists, runaways, locals, as well as street people, bums, and crazies. There was even a local defense patrol, known variously as the Anti-Pig Militia, the Lower East Side Defenders (LSD), and the Action Committee for Immediate Defense (ACID), promoted in Rat with a full-page illustration by Spain Rodriguez. — J.
