The radical event must be detached from any relation to the future

Evidence

The event which we do not see coming, in front of which we do not stand in so far as it does not expose itself nor announce itself in the face of sight or to some sealing of the eye, this event does not arrive necessarily from behind or from above, as I have just suggested. It can or may all too simply not come at all from an exteriority (in front of …, in back of …, from above …, or, from below …), from this in front of … more or less before us and from which we always believe events come to us, but it can or may come from within, from the within within the within which would not and never convert itself or be converted in some sort of without, some sort of outside or exteriority and in any case would render this opposition ‘within–without’, ‘inside– outside’, ‘interiority–exteriority’ radically null and void. Graver still for the figure or the scheme of the expression ‘to see (what is) coming’, and perhaps for all figures in general, for its opening to sight, to speech, to hearing, what would come in this manner would have no essential relation to the future, but with an absolute past which would be irreducible to the now-present form as the future you have been speaking of. We would then have to emancipate what comes (the event), the very concept of the event, from all relation to the future. — Catherine Malabou, The Future of Hegel, 123

Categorization

  • DEFINE: Derrida redefines the ‘event’ so that it comes from an interiority irreducible to exteriority and from an absolute past rather than the future.
  • XREF: Connects to Derrida’s hauntology and ‘l’avenir’ vs ‘le futur’ distinction — the absolute past as ‘to come’ parallels Specters of Marx. — connects to: Complete absorption in the present makes future commitment impossible — Georg Simmel, on individuality and social forms_…, 468; Immediacy’s temporality is a present stripped of any future. — Anna Kornbluh, Immediacy, or The Style of Too Late…, 387
  • QUESTION: How does this ‘event from the absolute past’ square with the plasticity/temporal dialectic Malabou is developing from Hegel?
