The Ottomans were the only remaining Islamic power capable of sheltering displaced Moriscos
Evidence
The Ottomans had by now emerged more clearly than ever as the sole Islamic power in the Middle East likely to fulfill the responsibilities of the Caliphate. There were reverses (Lepanto) as well as successes, but with the exception of Morocco (see below) there was nowhere else for the Moriscos to turn when they were faced with the final disaster. The Ottomans had other troubles in their now vast empire, but recent research has shown that their response to the appeals made to them for help were much more generous and far more practical than has hitherto been realized. The full story will not come to light until the vast archives of the Ottomans (who were paper-loving generators of official reports almost to outdo the Habsburgs) are fully available. — L. P.
