The Ottawa convoy mixed opposing political signs into an untangleable diagonal knot
Evidence
The protests certainly served up good visuals. There were snowball fights, beer kegs, pot in the air, and a sea of Canadian flags. There were Jericho Marchers and street sermons and many people claiming to be taking orders directly from God. There were hugs for strangers and epithets for passersby wearing masks. There really was an inflatable hot tub. And there were also all the unmistakable signs of political discombobulation that mark the diagonalist world: someone earnestly waving a giant swastika-festooned Nazi flag and others waving Confederate flags, alongside anti-vax demonstrators wearing their yellow stars and holding signs declaring themselves to be living under apartheid or Jim Crow. Were these people Nazis or anti-Nazis? Segregationists or anti-segregationists? Were they proud patriots or insurrectionists determined to overturn the results of our recent election? It hardly seemed to matter—the convoy was pipiked to its core, a knot of seriousness and ridiculousness that would never be untangled. — Naomi Klein, Doppelganger, 861
Categorization
- DEFINE: Vividly instantiates ‘diagonalist’ and the newly-coined ‘pipiked’ as concrete, observable phenomena — the perfect definitional anchor for Klein’s core term.
- XREF: Connects to the reader’s stated interest in diagonalism as wellness/anti-vax/conspiracy/far-right convergence — this is its literal visual demonstration.
