The oath and the Terror preserved the revolutionary group against collapse into seriality
Evidence
Already the oath and the Terror were implicit attempts on the part of the group itself to preserve itself in being from within, and to stave off an eventual collapse back into seriality. But as this danger increases, the group undergoes an even more decisive transformation and adaptation. It prolongs its life as a group primarily by developing an or- ganization, and it is clear that the demarcation of separate responsibilities, the assignment of tasks of different orders, the division of labor, are ultimately inconsistent with the total democracy and equality of the revolving thirds. — Fredric Jameson, Marxism and Form, 6446
