The Mudejar compact’s internal contradictions eroded Islamic law over time
Evidence
The essence of the compact on which Mudejar status rested was that the Christian ruler, in exchange for the political loyalty of his Muslim subjects, agreed to respect their separate religion and to preserve, insofar as possible, their Islamic legal system. In general, the Aragonese rulers strove to keep their part of the bargain, as they understood it, at least, but the logical flaws inherent in such a juridical compromise meant that as the years went by the Islamic law itself became eroded. — L.
