The Morisco question is fundamentally about drawing identity boundaries.
Evidence
The “Morisco Question” or the “Morisco Problem” begins and ends as a matter of delimitation, of the drawing of political, intellectual, and religious boundaries, of who belongs on one side of a line, geographic and ideological, and who on the other. The conversions, far from creating a tidy situation, had an outcome that was ambiguous and muddled. The ambiguous Morisco community, who were Christians in outward show as the law of the land demanded but still, most of them, Muslims in their hearts, were systematically hypocritical as Christians saw it, heroic resisters as they saw themselves. — L. P. Harvey, Muslims in Spain, 1500 to 1614, 1240
