The method of constant stimuli needs prior knowledge of testable levels

Evidence

Measuring the psychometric function typically employs the method of constant stimuli, one of the three classical psychophysical procedures used to measure perceptual abilities. Implementation of this method requires some a priori knowledge of the stimulus levels to be tested, often acquired during pilot experimentation or from other published studies. In order to implement this method, then, the experimenter determines the set of stimulus levels to be tested that will span the range of performance. — Jennifer Lentz, Psychoacoustics- Perception of Normal…, 287
