The market is anarchic and unplanned economy-wide
Evidence
While central planning may prevail within a corporation (managers decide the general level of production and hiring), this is not the case at the level of our economy. There is no planning regarding what is produced and distributed or what is socially necessary. The New York City Council does not meet to discuss how many apples and how many shoes New Yorkers need for the month and figure out how to deliver them to their homes. The market is anarchic. Any one business produces whatever it likes so long as it can stay afloat. Competition is a continuous battle. Every business must struggle within an environment it does not control; and even if it could control, say, the weather, it still couldn’t control its competitors. — Clara E. Mattei, Escape from Capitalism, 109
